Strategies of a Genius
Leonardo da Vinci was the first man to
design the helicopter, the parachute, and
the hydraulic lift, among hundreds of
other devices. For good measure, he was a towering genius
as a painter and draftsman. His incredible prowess at
bringing inventions and painted figures to life was based on a
technique he developed of seeing things more deeply and
with greater understanding than other people could. He
called it saper vendere or "knowing how to see." His
technique lends itself not merely to painting or inventing, but
also to solving business problems and brainstorming
innovations. Da Vinci 's strategies for attacking a problem or
sizing up an opportunity.
Learn the Parts. For an entrepreneurial businessman contemplating a problem or strategic move, learning to "draw" the project from many angles means defining its consequences in writing from many points of view - - from that of your customer, your competitors, your employees, and perhaps the view of a different kind of customer.
Technique of Extremes. To understand the systems at work in any business problem, try pushing each of the elements to its extreme in your imagination: If you're evaluating organizational staffing, imagine the worst company crisis possible, and how each of your people would respond to it.
The Twilight Technique. Da Vinci took advantage of "twilight time" just before he fell asleep and just before he awoke to "go over again in his imagination the main outlines of the forms previously studied or speculated." Many entrepeneurs plan for twilight time inspirations by getting to bed early certain nights and always keeping a paper and pen by the bedside*.
